It was established in 1945 in the Wola district. A year later, 12 tonnes of human ashes collected from around the city were buried there. Around 104,000 victims of World War II were laid there – mainly insurgents who fell during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, defenders of Warsaw from 1939, Varsovians murdered during the occupation, Jews executed on the premises of the Skra sports stadium. Most of the victims laid there remain unknown and unidentified. A monument named ‘Fallen Unconquerable’ (Polegli Niepokonani) stands at the cemetery; a plaque at its foot says that buried there are the ashes of over 50,000 Poles (Warsaw's inhabitants and soldiers) killed by Nazi invaders during Warsaw Uprising in August and September 1944.
